How to Study for the SAT

Study for the SAT with a plan

12 min read

Create a Study Schedule

The SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes long. To prepare, students should create a study schedule that covers all sections of the test. The Reading and Writing section has two 32 minute modules of 27 questions. Math has two 35 minute modules of 22 questions. A good schedule allows for 2 hours of study each day, 5 days a week.

Understand Section Adaptive Testing

The Digital SAT is section adaptive. This means the first module decides whether the second module is easier or harder. Students need to focus on doing well in the first module to get an easier second module. They can do this by practicing under timed conditions to build endurance. Practicing with 27 question modules for Reading and Writing and 22 question modules for Math is a good start.

Practice with Real Questions

Practicing with real SAT questions is the best way to prepare. Students can use official study guides or online resources to get these questions. They should practice 30 questions each day, reviewing the answers and explanations. This will help them understand the format and content of the test. It will also help them identify areas where they need to focus their study.

Review and Analyze Mistakes

Reviewing and analyzing mistakes is a critical part of studying for the SAT. Students should review each question they got wrong, looking at the explanation and making sure they understand the concept. They can then focus their study on these areas, practicing more questions to build their skills. This will help them improve their score over time. The tradeoff is that this approach can be boring and time-consuming.

Take Full-Length Practice Tests

Taking full-length practice tests is essential to building endurance and understanding the test format. Students should take one test per week, using official study guides or online resources. They should then review their results, looking at areas where they need to improve. This will help them identify their strengths and weaknesses, and focus their study accordingly. The Digital SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes long, so students need to be able to focus for this amount of time.

Track Progress and Set Goals

Tracking progress and setting goals is important to staying motivated and focused. Students should track their scores over time, looking at areas where they have improved and areas where they still need to work. They can then set specific goals, such as improving their Reading score by 50 points. This will help them stay motivated and focused on their study plan. Scores on the SAT run from 400 to 1600, with each section scored from 200 to 800.
