SAT Math Section Overview: What to Expect

The SAT Math section is 35 minutes long, divided into two modules of 35 minutes each. The first module has 22 questions, and so does the second module. Each module tests a range of math skills, from algebra to geometry.

SAT Math questions are multiple choice, with four possible answers. Some questions are straightforward math problems, while others are word problems that require math to solve. There are also grid-in questions, where test-takers must provide their own answers.

SAT Math tests skills in heart of algebra, problem solving and data analysis, and passport to advanced math. Heart of algebra questions account for 33% of the test, and include topics like linear equations and functions. Problem solving and data analysis questions account for 29% of the test.

The Digital SAT is section adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second module depends on the first module's score. If a test-taker scores high on the first module, the second module will be harder. If a test-taker scores low, the second module will be easier. This format allows for a more accurate score.

To prepare for the SAT Math section, focus on practicing different types of questions. Spend 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week, reviewing math concepts and taking practice tests. This will help build endurance and improve scores. The tradeoff is less time for other activities, but it's worth it for a good score.

Time management is critical on the SAT Math section. Allocate 1 minute per question, and spend more time on the questions that are most likely to give the most points. If a question seems too hard, move on and come back to it later. This strategy can help maximize scores.
