Introduction to SAT Scoring

The SAT is scored on a 1600 scale. Each section, Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Math, is scored from 200 to 800. The total score is the sum of these two sections. The test is 2 hours 14 minutes long.

How Questions are Scored

Each question on the SAT is scored as either correct or incorrect. There are no penalties for incorrect answers. The Reading and Writing section has two 32 minute modules of 27 questions each. The Math section has two 35 minute modules of 22 questions each. A student gets 1 point for each correct answer.

Section Adaptive Test

The Digital SAT is section adaptive. This means the first module of each section decides whether the second module is the easier or harder one. If a student does well on the first module, they get a harder second module. If they do poorly, they get an easier second module. This affects the student's overall score. To prepare, students should focus on consistently answering questions correctly in the first module.

Calculating the Total Score

The total score is the sum of the ERW and Math scores. To calculate the score, add the number of correct answers in each module, then convert that raw score to a scaled score. The College Board uses a formula to do this conversion, which can result in a score from 200 to 800 for each section. Students can use online tools to estimate their score based on the number of correct answers.

Using an SAT Score Calculator

An SAT score calculator can help estimate a student's total score. These calculators ask for the number of correct answers in each module. They then use a formula to estimate the scaled score. Students can find these calculators online. To get the most accurate estimate, students should use the official practice tests or real test questions. The tradeoff is that these calculators are only estimates, and the actual score may vary.

Preparing for the Test

To prepare for the test, students should practice consistently and review the material. They can use official practice tests or online resources to prepare. The most effective way to prepare is to focus on weaknesses and practice under timed conditions. This can be boring and hard, but it is the best way to improve scores. Students should aim to practice for at least 1 hour per day, 3 days per week.
